On Saturday, December 3, 2023, Place Boyer in Pétion-Ville was transformed into a lively and inspiring stage thanks to the exceptional talent of artists with disabilities. The community came together to celebrate the International Day of Disabled Persons in an exciting event organized as part of one of the projects of the German organization Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB), which aims to strengthen the participation of disabled people in the political, social and economic spheres in Haiti.
Since 1992, December 3 has been designated the “International Day of Disabled Persons” by the United Nations, with the aim of promoting the integration and access of disabled people to economic, social and political life. In Haiti, this day is of particular importance because of the challenges faced by these people, such as stigmatization and discrimination.
The main aim of the event was to raise public awareness of the stereotypes and myths associated with disability, while promoting inclusion and boosting the self-esteem of people with disabilities. Over 300 residents took part in nine interactive activities featuring participants of all ages, from children to adults, demonstrating their varied artistic talents, including theater, music, literature, painting and dance. In addition, disabled artists from the “Handicap et Culture” festival had the opportunity to exhibit and sell their artistic works, thus contributing to their economic empowerment.
The organization “Inisyativ Sante Mantal” (ISMA), which organized this memorable event, renewed its commitment to the active promotion of the rights and well-being of disabled people. Through dynamic educational activities, the community was made aware and involved in an interactive way. A sign language interpreter captivated the audience’s attention by teaching simple phrases, reinforcing the reach of inclusion and awareness around disability.
The interactive plays won over the audience, who gave them a warm round of applause. The celebration of the International Day of Disabled Persons in Pétion-Ville was not just an artistic event. It was a celebration of inclusion, talent and community strength, reinforcing the commitment to a more equitable and accessible society for all.
This inspiring show is just one of many initiatives in ASB’s inclusion project in Haiti. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), this project, implemented by ISMA and the Organisme de socio-professionnels, de Consultation, de Formation et de Recherche sur l’accessibilité universelle et l’inclusion (Oconfor), plans many other similar activities. These events will continue to raise awareness and mobilize the community in favor of the inclusion of people with disabilities in Haiti, reinforcing the commitment to a more just and accessible society for all.
