ASB launches second phase of project to strengthen ecological resilience in southern Haiti.

Following the success of the first phase of the project to strengthen ecological resilience in Grand Bois National Natural Park (PNN-GB) in 2021, ASB, in partnership with Haiti National Trust (HNT) and FeODITi, its two local partners, is launching a second phase of the project on June 7, 2023, which will run until April 2026. The launch takes place in the commune of Tiburon, in the presence of some forty people representing the partner organizations working on the project, state entities, local dignitaries and members of civil society.

Initiated in November 2020, the first phase of the project, which lasted 9 months, enabled actions to be taken aimed at good governance of the park, the development of alternative value chains for the local population and building the capacities of local communities in the face of the challenges of climate change. However, given the crucial stakes involved in preserving this fragile ecosystem, ASB has decided to extend its commitment and expand its actions to achieve even more sustainable results.

This second phase, entitled “Strengthening the resilience of ecosystems and communities threatened by climate change in the Macaya Biosphere Reserve in Haiti”, is aimed at strengthening the

Efforts will be pursued to strengthen park governance and continue to implement actions to rehabilitate and protect the protected area. At the same time, efforts will focus on community development by promoting environmentally-friendly practices and socio-economic alternatives for local families and communities. It also aims to strengthen the resilience of ecosystems and communities, by encouraging the diversification of activities and sources of income for the inhabitants of buffer zones so as to discourage destructible activities in the park.

Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the project will be implemented by FeODTi and HNT, who have already collaborated with ASB on the first phase.

This project represents an important step towards preserving the ecosystem of Grand Bois National Park and strengthening the resilience of local communities in the face of environmental challenges. The various speakers at the launch ceremony expressed the hope that all stakeholders would work together to ensure the project’s success.
